the lighter side of sad is a new dance-theatre project choreographed by Ali Kenner Brodsky that includes a live production and a dance film, exploring the spectrum of grief and how it changes us. For the live performance, an improvisational trio of shifting vignettes captures the release, guilt, joy, anxiety, overwhelm and the adapting relationships necessary to navigate fluctuation of heavy emotions. For the dance film triptych, akb & co will investigate the same concepts from a different lens.

Ali is working collaboratively with dancers Scott McPheeters, Jacqui DeFranca and with composer MorganEve Swain. The performers will navigate improvisational scores through the physical landscape of a gallery, living room, theater – and also interrogate their relationship with each other and their own personal relationship with grief. The project will consist of film screenings on loop in a gallery space which will be viewed before an evening-length dance work. For the film project, Ali will work with longtime collaborator director of photography Rich Ferri and filmmaker Jarret Blinkhorn.
